BGLC taking steps to protect vulnerable groups from gambling adverts

Following research findings, the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) has decided to consider a proposal on new regulations for the promotion and advertising of gambling and gambling-related products in Jamaica, which is to be guided within days by the launch of a public consultation process.

In a release, the commission said in recent years, the gambling industry has witnessed a major surge in advertising efforts across various media channels, including television, social media and online platforms, that are beneficial to the industry’s growth, but are raising concerns about the impact on vulnerable groups in the society, such as problem gamblers and children.

The consultation is to be in the form of an e-survey where persons may respond by:

  • Accessing the online survey at www.bglc.gov.jm
  • Sending responses by post to BGLC; 78cef Hagley Park Road, Kingston 10
  • Send responses by email to info@bglc.gov.jm

The BGLC said based on its commitment to transparency and accountability in the gambling sector, it is inviting all stakeholders, including consumers, betting, gambling and lottery operators and members of the public generally, to share their views on the proposals.

The BGLC said it is aware that research conducted by betting, gaming and lottery regulators in other parts of the world have shown a clear link between marketing and advertising and risk to customers.

“Being the national regulatory authority for all forms of gambling in Jamaica, the BGLC, in evaluating if consumers are exposed to a similar risk (here in Jamaica),” said the commission, advising that it “must ensure that appropriate controls are put in place”.

The commission said it also recognises that the type and level of risk will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, so the rules and controls that are applied need to be proportionate and relevant to the betting and gambling market in Jamaica.
